It is lambing time on the farm and our Easycare sheep have their lambs outside so we need good weather. Most of them have two lambs each but some have three which means we take one away and adopt it onto a ewe that has only had one. The first round of crop protection is done in April to prevent fungal diseases developing and stopping the wheat growing too tall. This is also when the main dose of fertiliser is applied to encourage seed production. The warmer weather and greater light intensity means the crops are growing quickly, but there is usually a “blackthorn winter” with a period of cold weather until the white petals of the blackthorn bush have fallen. This was at the end of April this year.
